Bau-Haus 1993
Bau-Haus 1993 is one of the latest addition to Jakarta’s restaurant and bar scene, located in a very strategic location in the middle of Jakarta, we just had to try it out.
The name and the setting for this particular restaurant takes the inspiration of two historical periods; the German design movement Bauhaus and the US Prohibition Era.
The ambiance and the concept of this restaurant is somewhat dark, rich and cool, which appeals more to the male gender. It is the perfect place to wind down after a busy working day and enjoy their specialy crafted cocktails made by their house mixologists.

But don’t be fooled, they are not just great at their cocktails and other types of alcohols, they are also great with their food menus.
The Fat Corner is lucky enough to be invited to one of their food-tasting and their cocktail-tasting sessions.

Its Tongue Delish is basically beef tongue sandwiched between two mantao buns with a dressing of hoisin glaze.
I found the dish quite bland and found the tongue too chewy.
Next was the Crab Cake; freshly pulled crab meat with pepper, corriander, lemin skin and served with chili aioli.
I have to regretfully say that this dish was quite forgettable and mediocre.

The next dish saved the day. Foei-Gras pan seared with candied pears on a crustini.
Three Foei Gras was definitely not enough, I can probably gobble down 3 portions of these very easily.

And of course in every good bar they will always have good Chicken Wings.
In Bauhaus their wings are called Bauhaus Wings, which are double fried chicken wings (YES they do DOUBLE fried their chicken wings, which seriously elevate their chicken wings to another level) glazed with their sambal bajak, their house special.
What can be better than Indonesia-style chicken wings?

Going on to their mains, we started off with Ramen Carbonara. Or simply just soba noodles served with seafood infused cream with green peas and bacon.
It is good but not great in my opinion.

Then we went on to their Pork Ribs, another decadent surprise.
The pork ribs was glazed with kojuchang paste and served with coleslaw salad. I am not a fan of coleslaw, but I found that their coleslaw quite refreshing.

The third main is probably one of the best Lamb Dishes I have tasted in Jakarta.
The lamb rack was grilled on walnut demiglace sauce, served with baked potatoes and sauteed veggies.
The meat itself was very juicy and tender, although their sauce came off a little bit one dimensional.

The last main was their Laksa, claimed to be the most ordered dish in the restaurant.
I have to agree. Their seafood broth is cooked to perfection with spices-egg, chicken, prawn, bean sprout and rice stick.
I’ll have to say it tasted pretty close to the Laksas in Singapore. I drank every single drip of broth.

We managed to try their top 3 desserts, which are Key Lime Pie, Choco Coconut De Pot and Poached Pear.
The Key Lime Pie is quite a rare dessert to be served in Jakarta. As a big dessert eater, I approve of this Key Lime pie mainly because of its bold lime flavor.

Their Choco Coconut De Pot is chocolate coconut semi ice-cream served with apple chips. Quite an interesting and unique dessert but was more a miss than a hit for me.

To finish off the meal is the Poached Pear served with vanilla crumble and custard. This particular dessert is time consuming and demands a lot of technique to execute well.
Bauhaus managed to pull it off. I am definitely coming back just to have more of this.

Throughout the night we were served a string of cocktails. As a non-alcoholic, unlike AliceInWonderland, my review of the drinks will probably be biased.
I’ll have you judge the cocktails through my interesting photos instead.

Impressive?
Bau-Haus 1993 serves interesting food and some of the funniest looking cocktails. It is definitely a new contender to the food and bar scene in Jakarta.
I recommend this place especially for cocktail lovers out there!
